PhD position in Mathematical Physics/M-theory

School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

A PhD position is available within the research project "Integrability in M-Theory" at the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. The aim of this project is to study various aspects of recently proposed theories for the effective description of multiple M2-branes within M-theory. The research will be conducted in collaboration with Christian Saemann (http://www.christiansaemann.de), see also the project's EPSRC homepage for further details.

There are a number of people at both Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh working on related topics, and there is much interaction within the Edinburgh Mathematical Physics Group (see here for members and research activities).

The total duration of the studentship is up to four years and can start around September 2010. The annual stipend is £13,290 and tuition fees are covered. The prospective candidate should have a good undergraduate degree and training in quantum field theory and related areas; some background in differential geometry is helpful.

Inquiries and applications (the latter preferably as a single pdf-file) should be sent by email to Christian Saemann (c.saemann@hw.ac.uk). An application should include a cover letter and a CV with a transcript of attended lectures. Please have also at least two letters of recommendation sent directly to the above email address. For full consideration, applications should be received no later than 31 March 2010.
